Understanding the Promise and Power of the Holy Spirit
When most people think about the Day of Pentecost, they think about tongues of fire, a mighty rushing wind, and the dramatic events recorded in the Book of Acts. But Pentecost was much more than a one-time event in church history. It was the fulfillment of God's purpose to place His very presence within His people.
In this message, Pastor Marc explores the connection between the Old Testament feast of Shavuot and the New Testament outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Just as God formed Israel into a covenant nation at Mount Sinai, He formed the Church into His holy nation through the baptism of the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost.

The Promise of the Father
Before ascending to heaven, the Lord Jesus Christ instructed His disciples to wait in Jerusalem for "the Promise of the Father" (Luke 24:49).
This promise was not merely a blessing or a feeling. It was the gift of the Holy Spirit—the third person of the Trinity—who would come to dwell within believers. Jesus described Him as the Spirit of Truth, our Helper, Comforter, Counselor, and Advocate.
Under the Old Testament, God was often seen as working for His people. During the earthly ministry of Christ Jesus, God was with His people through Emmanuel. But after Pentecost, everything changed.
Now, through God's Spirit, believers experience "God in us, the hope of glory."
This is one of the greatest truths of the Christian life. The very presence of God no longer dwells merely among His people—it dwells within them.
God With Us Became God In Us
Jesus told His disciples that the Holy Spirit would not only be with them but would be in them.
This is the foundation of the Spirit-filled life.
Many Christians live as though they are spiritual orphans, trying to navigate life through their own strength. Yet Jesus promised that He would never leave His followers alone.
Through the gift of the Holy Spirit, believers today have access to God's power, God's wisdom, God's love, and God's presence every day.
The same Spirit who raised Christ Jesus from the dead now lives within the children of God.
That truth alone should transform our daily lives.
The Power of the Holy Spirit
Acts 1:8 contains one of the most important promises in Scripture:
"But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you..."
The Greek word used for power is "dunamis," the same root from which we get words like dynamic and dynamite.
This is not human ability. It is divine power.
It is the power of the Spirit of God working through ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary things.
Pastor Marc illustrated this with the image of an old bicycle dynamo. As the wheel turned, the dynamo converted mechanical energy into electrical energy, producing light.
Likewise, the Holy Spirit takes our ordinary efforts and fills them with God's power. Without Him, our works accomplish little. With Him, our lives become vessels through which the light of Christ shines into the world.
This is the role of the Holy Spirit—to empower believers to live victoriously, serve faithfully, and become effective witnesses for Jesus of Nazareth.
The Early Church Understood God's Power
The early church understood something that many believers struggle to grasp today.
They knew the power was not their own.
When Apostle Peter and Apostle John encountered the lame man at the Beautiful Gate in Acts 3, they boldly declared:
"Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk."
They understood that the power of God was resident within them through the Holy Spirit.
When the miracle occurred, they immediately redirected the glory back to God. It was not their own strength. It was not their own godliness. It was the manifestation of the Spirit working through them.
The same Holy Spirit's power that worked through the apostles is available to believers today.
Signs Follow Believers
One of the most challenging truths from the New Testament is found in Mark 16.
Jesus said:
"And these signs shall follow them that believe."
Notice that signs were never intended to be pursued. Signs follow believers.
The goal of the Holy Spirit is not merely to create emotional experiences. The goal of the Holy Spirit is to empower believers to proclaim the good news, demonstrate God's love, and reveal God's power to a world in need of hope.
As members of the church, we are called to trust the Word of God, rely on the power of Scripture, and allow the Holy Spirit's work to flow through our lives.
Living a Spirit-Empowered Christian Life
The Christian life was never designed to be lived through human effort alone.
We cannot overcome the works of the flesh through willpower. We cannot fulfill God's purpose through our own strength. We cannot become who God created us to be apart from the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit brings new life.
He produces the fruit of the Spirit.
He distributes spiritual gifts and gifts of the Holy Spirit.
He brings the renewing of your mind.
He develops the mind of Christ within believers.
He reveals the deep things of God.
He replaces the spirit of fear with faith, confidence, and a sound mind.
Most importantly, He continually points us to the Lord Jesus Christ.
The Promise Is For You
One of the most encouraging statements in the Book of Acts is Peter's declaration:
"For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off."
That promise remains true today.
The gift of the Holy Spirit is not reserved for the apostles. It is not reserved for the early church. It is not reserved for a select few.
The promise is for believers today.
It is for your children.
It is for your grandchildren.
It is for those who are far from God.
It is for everyone whom the Heavenly Father calls to Himself.
The same power of the Holy Spirit that was poured out on the Day of Pentecost continues to transform lives, empower believers, and advance the Kingdom of God to the ends of the earth.
