5 Ways the Gospel of Peace Helps You Stand Firm in Spiritual Warfare
When the Apostle Paul describes the Armor of God in Ephesians 6, he tells believers to have their feet “shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace.”
That might not sound as dramatic as a sword or shield, but a soldier’s footwear was essential. Without solid footing, the rest of the armor could not be used effectively.
The same is true spiritually.
God’s peace gives believers stability when life feels uncertain, protects our hearts and minds from fear and confusion, helps us pursue peace with others, and prepares us to carry the good news of Jesus Christ into the world.
And it all begins with remembering one foundational truth:
We are not fighting for victory. We are fighting from victory.
Jesus has already won the decisive victory through His death, burial, and resurrection. Our calling is to learn how to stand in what Christ has already accomplished.
Here are five important truths about the Gospel of Peace and the Armor of God.
1. The Gospel of Peace Gives You Firm Spiritual Footing
Ephesians 6:15 tells us to have our feet fitted with:
“The preparation of the gospel of peace.”
Roman soldiers needed footwear that gave them traction and stability in battle. If a soldier lost his footing, the rest of his armor became far less effective.
Spiritually, peace gives us that same stability.
Fear, anxiety, confusion, guilt, and uncertainty can leave us feeling spiritually off balance. But when we understand what Jesus accomplished for us, we have somewhere firm to stand.
Our circumstances may change.
Our emotions may fluctuate.
The world around us may become chaotic.
But Christ does not change.
That is why spiritual warfare begins with learning how to stand firmly on the truth of the Gospel.
2. Peace With God Comes From Being Made Right With God
Before we can consistently experience the peace of God, we need to understand that through Christ we have peace with God.
Romans 5:1 says:
“Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
To be justified means that through faith in Jesus Christ, we have been made right with God.
Our relationship with God is not based on perfect behavior or our ability to earn His approval.
It is based on the finished work of Jesus.
Christ paid the price for our sin.
Because of Him, believers can live from a place of forgiveness rather than condemnation.
This connects directly to the previous piece of the Armor of God: the Breastplate of Righteousness.
Truth teaches us that we have been made righteous through Christ. When we understand that righteousness, one of its fruits is peace.
The enemy may remind you of mistakes, failures, or moments when you fell short.
But your peace is not built on your perfection.
It is built on Christ.
3. The Peace of God Guards You Against Anxiety and Confusion
God’s peace is not simply a peaceful feeling.
It actively guards us.
Philippians 4 tells believers not to be controlled by anxiety, but instead to bring their concerns to God through prayer and thanksgiving.
Then comes this promise:
“And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”
The enemy often tries to disrupt our spiritual footing through fear, worry, confusion, and endless “what if?” thoughts.
But Scripture gives us another response.
Pray.
Bring the situation to God.
Remember what Christ has already done.
Allow His peace to guard your heart and mind.
Colossians 3:15 also tells us to let the peace of Christ rule in our hearts.
The peace of God can become like an umpire in our lives, helping us recognize when our thoughts, attitudes, and decisions are pulling us away from what God desires.
If something continually produces fear, bitterness, resentment, or confusion, it deserves to be brought before God.
His peace can help steady us.
4. God Calls Us to Become Peacemakers
The Gospel of Peace is not only defensive.
It is also offensive.
Once we experience peace with God, that peace should begin to affect the way we interact with other people.
Jesus said:
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.” — Matthew 5:9
Christians should carry peace into their homes, workplaces, schools, churches, neighborhoods, and relationships.
That does not mean every disagreement disappears.
It does not mean ignoring wrongdoing.
And it does not mean every relationship can immediately be restored.
Romans teaches us:
“If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men.”
Our responsibility is to do what we can to pursue peace.
Instead of allowing someone else’s anger, bitterness, or chaos to determine our response, we can allow the peace of Christ within us to influence the atmosphere around us.
We are called to be makers and maintainers of peace.
5. The Gospel of Peace Prepares Us to Share the Good News of Jesus
There is another reason Paul connects the Gospel with our feet.
Feet move.
They take us somewhere.
Romans 10:15 says:
“How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace, who bring glad tidings of good things!”
The Gospel literally means good news.
Every believer has been given a mission to carry that good news into the world.
Your mission field might not be another country.
It may be your neighborhood.
Your workplace.
Your school.
Your family.
Your circle of friends.
God has placed people around you who need to hear the message of Jesus Christ.
And that message is ultimately a message of peace.
At the birth of Christ, the angels declared:
“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men!”
Jesus came bringing good news.
In a world filled with bad news, outrage, fear, conflict, and division, the Church must remember the message we have been entrusted to carry.
Jesus Christ is Lord.
God loves you.
Jesus gave His life for you.
Through Him, forgiveness and eternal life are available.
That is the Gospel of Peace.
Put On Your Gospel Shoes
The Armor of God is not simply something Christians are supposed to know about.
It is something we are called to put on and use.
The Gospel of Peace reminds us that:
Christ has already won the victory.
We have peace with God through Jesus.
God’s peace can guard our hearts and minds.
We are called to pursue peace with others.
We have been sent to carry the good news of Jesus into the world.
So when you begin your day, remember your spiritual footing.
Stand firmly in what Christ has already accomplished.
Do not allow fear, condemnation, anxiety, or confusion to knock you off balance.
Put on the Gospel of Peace—and carry that peace wherever God sends you.
