The Shield of Faith: How to Stand Against Fear and Spiritual Attacks
Fear, anxiety, discouragement, temptation, bitterness, and unforgiveness can feel deeply personal. Yet Scripture teaches that some of the battles we experience are not merely emotional or circumstantial. They are part of a spiritual conflict designed to weaken our confidence in God and pull us away from His purposes.
God has not left us defenseless. In Ephesians 6, the apostle Paul describes the spiritual armor God provides to every believer. After introducing the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, and the shoes of peace, Paul writes:
“Above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.” — Ephesians 6:16 NKJV
The shield of faith is more than a theological idea. It is a spiritual defense that must be taken up and actively used. Through faith, we can resist the enemy, remain grounded in God’s truth, and continue walking with Jesus regardless of what comes against us.

The Shield Covers the Whole Person
The Roman shield Paul used as his illustration was not small. It could be nearly as large as a door and was designed to cover a soldier’s entire body. Some shields were made of wood and covered with hide that could be soaked in water to extinguish flaming arrows. A shield could also be planted in the ground as a barrier or used to push an opponent backward.
In the same way, faith is both defensive and active. It protects us from the enemy’s attacks, but it also helps us stand our ground and push back against anything that contradicts the Word of God.
Roman shields often carried identifying marks that showed which unit the soldier belonged to or whom he served. Our faith also identifies us. When we raise the shield of faith, we declare that our trust is in Almighty God and that we belong to Jesus Christ.
Recognize the Fiery Arrows
Paul says the shield of faith can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the wicked one. That includes every kind of attack intended to move us away from God’s truth and purpose.
Those arrows may come as fear, anxiety, anger, jealousy, lust, condemnation, animosity, bitterness, or unforgiveness. They may arrive as thoughts that tell us God has abandoned us, His promises cannot be trusted, or our situation will never change.
We do not have to accept every thought or emotion that comes against us. Instead, we can lift the shield of faith by declaring what God has said. When fear comes, we remember that God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind. When condemnation comes, we remember that we have been made righteous through Jesus Christ. When unforgiveness tries to take root, we remember how completely Christ has forgiven us.
Faith does not pretend the battle is not real. Faith determines which voice will have the final authority.
God Himself Is Our Shield
In Genesis 15:1, God spoke to Abram and said, “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your exceedingly great reward.”
Abram had refused to place his confidence in earthly wealth or human power. He chose to trust God as the source of everything he needed. God responded by assuring Abram that He would be his protection and reward.
When we hear the Word of God, receive it personally, and rely on it in the face of opposition, God becomes our shield. Our confidence is not in our own strength or our ability to control every outcome. Our confidence is in the character of the One who made the promise.
The enemy may fire arrows of fear, apprehension, offense, or discouragement, but those arrows do not have to remove us from God’s purposes. We can continue walking with Jesus, loving Jesus, and loving people because God is our source of victory.
If God said it, that settles it—and we can choose to believe it.
Faith Is the Victory
First John 5:4 says, “Everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith.”
Faith forms a protective barrier between us and the schemes of the enemy. When we take God at His Word, we remain grounded in truth, the enemy’s lies lose their power, and we are able to overcome.
This is also how we resist the devil. First Peter 5:8–9 warns that our adversary walks about like a roaring lion seeking someone to devour, but then instructs us to “resist him, steadfast in the faith.”
Raising the shield of faith means saying, “God’s Word is true and forever settled. The enemy does not have the authority to control me, condemn me, or remove me from the will of God.”
We Need One Another’s Faith
Roman soldiers did not always fight as isolated individuals. In a formation commonly called the Roman tortoise, soldiers locked their shields together to create protection above them and on every side. Together, they could withstand arrows that might overwhelm one soldier standing alone.
This gives us a powerful picture of the Church. Personal faith matters, but God did not design believers to fight every battle alone. We need others to pray with us, encourage us, remind us of God’s promises, and help carry us when our own strength feels weak.
The Church does not save us—salvation is a gift received through Jesus Christ. But a healthy church family nurtures, protects, teaches, and strengthens us. We need the balance of personal salvation and collective faith.
Philippians 1:27–28 describes believers standing united in one spirit and one passion, striving together for the faith of the gospel and refusing to be intimidated by opposition. When our shields are joined, our faith becomes protection not only for ourselves but also for the people beside us.
Faith Is the Title Deed
Hebrews 11:1 declares, “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” The Amplified Bible describes faith as the assurance, confirmation, and title deed of what we hope for.
A person can legally own property without physically standing on it because the title establishes ownership. In the same way, faith confirms that what God has promised belongs to us before we can see its full manifestation with our natural eyes.
The world says, “Seeing is believing.” Faith says that believing enables us to see from God’s perspective.
We should not allow the enemy to occupy territory God has rightfully given us through the new covenant. God’s promises are not based on what we feel in the moment. They rest on the finished work of Jesus Christ and the unchanging truth of His Word.
Faith Is Present, Gives Perspective, and Pleases God
Hebrews 11 reveals three important truths about faith.
First, faith is present tense: “Now faith is.” Faith is not merely wishing that God might act someday. It is trusting that His Word is true now, even before circumstances change.
Second, faith gives us God’s perspective. Hebrews 11:3 says, “By faith we understand.”
We may not perceive everything through our senses, but faith allows us to understand our lives and circumstances through the truth of God’s Word.
Third, faith pleases God. Hebrews 11:6 says that without faith it is impossible to please Him. When we continue trusting God through delays, trials, and opposition, our faith honors our heavenly Father.
Faith is most visible before the answer appears. Once the promise is manifested, it becomes known by sight. But while we are waiting—believing, trusting, and relying on God regardless of external circumstances—we are living by faith.
Take Up Your Shield
Faith does not mean we will never experience storms, tests, or tribulation. It means those battles do not have the final word. What the enemy intends for evil, God can use to refine our faith, restore our souls, and bring glory to Jesus Christ.
Take up the shield of faith. Use it to extinguish fear, anxiety, condemnation, bitterness, and every lie that tries to remove you from your walk with God. And when your faith feels weak, join your shield with other believers. Pray together. Encourage one another. Stand on God’s Word together.
We are not fighting for a victory we must somehow earn. We stand in the victory Jesus Christ has already won.
